Bill,
We all appreciate your opinions regarding how to break Apple's current distribution scheme. But, unfortunately it won't work at Apple's current situation. Most Apple's revenues are generated from hardware, not software, especially high-end products. Each company has its own structures and strategic plans. You just cannot pull out Microsoft's example and try to fit into Apple's.
Speaking of proprietary scheme, Apple's future OS, Rhapsody, is more open than Window 95, since it is based on Unix system. Strategically, systems have to be as open as possible, but, for the nature of how to run the business, Apple is still absolutely on the right track, control licensing for the high margin products, and continue controlling the newest technology as it evolves.
