While you may not like polls, the fact is that the overall sentiment in the country is not in favor of gay marriage. Right, wrong, indifferent, whatever. That's the political reality. Amd what we're really talking about is politics.
Interestingly, procreation is a constitutionally protected right. Laws regulating marriage are aimed at protection of the family unit.
Such considerations are generally absent in homosexual unions. This gets into the rational relationship area of analysis.
Unlike race, sex, national origin, etc., sexual orientation is not so identifiable. There are different schools of thought on the issue--some say people are born gay, others that it's a lifestyle choice, etc. I don't know the answer, but the point is that sexual orientation is not the same thing as race or sex.
There is an historical and cultural basis for the limitation of marriage to a man and a woman. While I am sympathetic and certainly supportive of protecting the legal rights of homosexuals, I think that can be accomplished through domestic partnership laws without changing marriage laws. People aren't ready for the latter, and they probably don't need to be.
I don't think you can compare slavery, treatment of blacks in education, denial of voting rights to women etc. to whether or not a gay couple can marry. |
