Energy costs remain sort of a hidden burden, IMO.

I was attempting to put the higher gasoline pricing in perspective ($24/yr) given the total number of household dollars spent on a product/service that inflates at 10%.

Of course, this varies widely on 'required' commuting distance for a given household, something somewhat within an individuals control, albeit a bit sticky. (cost to move the household vs fuel savings?) I read elsewhere that Coal To Liquids becomes economic at $30/barrel, so with sustained higher pricing we may see some capital investment along these lines.

The bigger picture: Uncle Sam putting a hundred dollar bill in one pocket via marginal tax cut, then taking it out of another pocket via higher food prices resulting from protectionism (tariffs & duties).

And restricting imports of beef in the name of safety (Canada, Argentina) when our own domestic production has underpublished embedded risks (ie, recent ecoli recall of frozen products produced months ago detected by Japanese testing in response to their domestic consumers taking ill; products likely fed to 'institutional' clients (which could include school lunches and prision inmates) & lack of comprehensive BSE testing program).

While Uncle Sam is busy addressing many woes in the world, past judgement errors remain unaddressed.
