There's plenty of reason to believe someone like him did exist, but there were numerous rabbi's like him roaming the countryside preaching about the Kingdom of God, this is widely accepted today even among serious Jewish thinkers and scholars... teaching about God's Laws was a huge threat to the pagan Roman government at the time, ergo, the guy had to go... the rest are simple traditional allegories, fables, and legends to support a particular stream of religious thought... crucifixion was a common punishment at that time, and thousands of people were crucified in that period...
