Hawk, Yes.... there is independent historical verification of Jesus' existence throughout the early writings of all the languages present in his life. The 'Didache' is one [Greek for teaching]... The early Christian movement was like a tree with many limbs and there were works written that didn't make it into the New Testament..... Thomas [Dead Sea Scrolls] is one. These various sects developed and encouraged certain traditions over others, leaving a confusion and scattering of teachings. One of the major conflicts: "Gods light shines not only in Jesus but, potentially at least, in everyone." As opposed to: "believe, and believing in [Jesus' name], one may have life...." The latter meant the church was the Vessel of Life [i.e. of power], rather then the individual. In about 360 c.e. there was a great gathering of all prominent Christians leaders and they decided the contents of the New Testament. From that point those left out were systematically destroyed and labeled heretical... it wasn't until the 'Secrete Gospel of Thomas' was found that anyone knew other Christian writings even existed. Scholars like Eliane Pagels do painstaking research in numerous early languages before they write a word.
