and reviewing Gibson's oeuvre, one critic concluded that judging by the way Gibson revels in martyrdom and torture in his movies, with himself the victim, you have to conclude that The Passion is for him in some sense, auto-biographical.

In some sense, it clearly is. Here's a quote from an interview with Gibson:

"My dad taught me my faith and I believe what he taught me. The man never lied to me in his life."
