First, you're are looking at it thru Saddam's secular eyes.

Because he is the one that started the war. The motivation for the war was his motivation.

Why did they want the Iranian Shias put down? Iran wasn't threatening anyone.

Iran was a very large potential threat and came close to being a more direct threat. Saudi and Kuwait where more afraid of Iran then Iraq until Iran actually invaded Kuwait.

Hardly. There are many non Arab Muslims in the world.

True but that doesn't mean that there is no such thing as Arab identity or any idea of "us vs. them" when dealing with non Arab Muslims. At the current time Islamic identity is growing and pan-Arabic identity is not but that doesn't mean it is of no concern at all.

They used Saddam to go after Iran.

Its a stretch to say they used Saddam for anything. Saddam was calling the shots.

But for the sake of argument lets say the Gulf states opinion was more important then Saddam and their reasons were 100% religious. Why should we want a Persian Gulf dominated by Iran? We had similar interests with the Gulf states at the time even if we had different motivations.
