Canada is having trouble as well, KL...Canadian Military Proposes Closure of Five Bases, Post Says

Feb. 24 (Bloomberg) -- Canada's army, navy and air force face a C$500 million ($375 million) funding shortfall and the military is recommending the closure of as many as five of its biggest bases to save money, the National Post reported.

The report was submitted to General Ray Henault, the Chief of Defense Staff, last month by the heads of the army, navy and air force, the Post said. The newspaper cited people who spoke on a condition of anonymity.

The federal government is stalling the release of the internal documents, the Post said. The funding shortage is so acute that the report foresees situations where operations are curtailed, ships are dry-docked and vehicles and aircraft are mothballed, the Post said.

The newspaper said the air force suggests shutting bases at Goose Bay, Newfoundland; Bagotville, Quebec; North Bay, Ontario; and Winnipeg, Manitoba. The air force also says that unless its fleet of aging CC-130 Hercules transport planes is replaced or modernized, the main transport base at Trenton, Ontario, should be closed within a decade because there won't be enough planes flying to justify operating the base, the Post said
