I think it's richly ironic that the film critics who say that the movie is too violent are on record for loving Quentin Tarantino and "The Gladiator."

Yes, that struck me too. Also, many complain about "lack of context" for the violence, but then it occurred to me that well, a lot of the audience is already familiar with the context - they read the Bible. And the front-page interviews with people who saw it indicates they liked it and "got" what Gibson was trying to say.
