I am rethinking this issue. I still agree that "all", the entire world, will be "much better off", but I am thinking that the US can't afford such altruism when a logical consequence of globalisation is that most of the US labor force will not be utilized. Blue collar jobs were shipped out in previous generations, white collar jobs are going, now, and illegal immigrants are taking more of the domestic service jobs.

RE: "..retrain the losers..."

I read an interview with Marc Andreesen (sp) in which he suggested that EEs who lost their jobs could retrain to work in the biotech industry. He didn't seem to realize that "retrain" has not usually meant acquiring a Phd in a new discipline.
