Mel Gibson's first movies were pretty darned brutal.... and they built a cult following. I don't think much has changed. I actually enjoyed his Road Warrior movies despite their dour message of little hope for humanity.

I think he is smart and sells to an audience. His first movies sold the idea to his fellow Aussies that they would survive a nuclear holocaust. Now he is selling a movie telling Christians what they want to hear, reinforcing their beliefs so to speak. No change really... a successful business model making movies to reinforce what he believes using violence as an attraction.
