I just got this note from a non-SI-member friend. Thought it worth posting:

I just listened to the TMG Briefing on the web. An interesting point is made that I was not aware of. As we go to 300mm wafers, you get double the factory output – IE 1 300mm fab equals the production output of 2 200mm fabs. As you move to 90nm, the effect is increased. The interesting point is that for a small producer like AMD it is difficult to move to 300mm if you can’t fill the factory. You either have to stay w/ 200mm and live with the inefficiencies, or partner / share a 300mm fab which increases logistical costs. As we go to 65nm in 2005, this issue gets even worse for small players.

The do or die that I just realized is that if AMD does not substantially increase their market share, they won’t be able to follow Intel down the process technology path and we will leave them in the dust in terms of cost.

The interesting reference is on page 8 of the presentation.
