Carlos, we ARE awake - are you?
I worked at UPS in 1980 as a part time worker I made 9.70 an hour before I quit. Pretty good for 1980.
Ups has the hardest working people in America. No argument.
Their workers have not kept up with inflation. I think they make 11-14 dollars an hour now. This 11-14 figure you mention is an average. I've heard 20-21 per hour on the high end. These wages are excellent considering that they are mainly for unskilled labor. Compare it to other unskilled job wages. In addition these unskilled, part-time, positions are excellent entry points into the job market.
Wages should be based on profits. To a small degree, I agree with you here. Many companies are implementing "profit sharing" programs these days. However, wages should, like most everything else, be determined by market forces.
But this is all rhetoric, isn't it Carlos? This is all smoke and mirrors. We all know on this thread that the real reason for the strike has to do with that darn 'ol pension fund and how UPS is having to contribute retirement funds to the entire Teamster workforce instead of just to its employees. In fact, compared to all the obfuscation over this part-time stuff, very little has been said about wages from either side.
Regards, Bill
