Well, it seems to me that, given that we have free will (not everybody believes this but it's a central tenet of the Catholic faith), so that we can choose to do good or to do evil, that it is impossible for the death of Christ to have been pre-ordained.

It must be that the possibility is there, but the reality is always contigent.

On a similar but related topic, given the immensity of the Universe and the likelihood that there are many inhabited planets, some of them populated with species with sufficient intelligence and foresight to choose to do evil, that Christ will be sent to them as one of them, a crystalline life form on one planet, and a multiple tentacled being on another.

But that's just my opinion.
