He's not necessarily a hero for his wounds....wounds are usually unvoluntary....he get's hero status for his Silver and Bronze Stars.... The Silver for going back into enemy fire to pull a swiftboat crewman out of the water while under enemy fire....that's heroism.... Do you not agree????? So why are you focusing on his wounds and not his heroism??????
