Immediately after Bush's state of the union, local Congressman, Peter DeFazio, wrote: "Tonight the President proposed privatizing Social Security. His plan would drain $1 trillion from the program and signal the end of Social Security as we know it. The only way to fill the hole created by privatization is to raise taxes, increase the national debt or slash benefits. There's no free lunch under President Bush's plan or any other privatization plan, for that matter."

I went to the SS office this week - thinking of going back to my former last name. YIKES what a hassle, so I decided not to. That issue over, I asked them what time frame Bush meant by "those at or NEAR retirement" will collect SS. Is "near" a month, a year, a decade? Well, the SS person said that rules are changing "weekly". She said nobody knows. She did add, wait a year and they might know something. From that I inferred she meant if Bush is out of office, things may stabilize. She went and got me a number to call for the answers. It was the federal reserve phone number. I said they are not a govt agency. She said call anyway. So I did and ended up talking to Greenspan's secretary! I should have asked for him. Another Greenspan person I was routed to told me to call Congress. Something's up! Maybe everyone should start calling Greenspan and Congress and visiting their SS offices to ask questions.
