I think labeling Kerry as a "liberal" is a mistake. His positions show thought and are frequently centrist.

As an example, Kerry supports Free Trade with solid agreements and help for impacted workers. Contrast this position with Bush's protectionism. But Bush does not protect workers, rather markets for major corporations (why do you think we are having mini-trade wars right now? Obviously not because of Kerry). Bush has taken the worst possible position on trade. Here is a commentary that explains this:

On the other hand, Bush is clearly in ideologue who doesn't let facts or science get in his way. This is a prescription for disaster, and that is why Bush's record is so poor.
