I'm about to give up and erase everything on my hard drive and start from scratch but would like some opinions before I throw in the towel and do it.
Here's the sad story:
I have a Compaq that's 21 months old with XP. It had the free EZ anti-virus software from MSFT and Computer Assoc. (which was terrible).
I noticed starting maybe 2 weeks ago that weird little things were happening..e.g. when I clicked on a favorite a different favorite would appear.
Then, about last thursday, the candlestick group (6 charts to a page) on stockcharts.com stopped showing the 6 charts and instead showed boxes with red Xs in them. I tried everything stockcharts.com suggested, and the problem continued.
I then went to tucows and installed McAfee anti-virus for a 30 day trial. I ran the scan it it found 2 Trojans which it deleted.
McAfee firewall protector kept asking if I wanted to stop or let be something or other and after it asked the same thing a few times I clicked on the stop button--think it may have had something to do with script. After that, things became totally intolerable...Whenever I had Outlook Express on I kept getting little windows popping up saying
WINDOWS SCRIPT HOST Cannot find script file C: program files\SBC\connection manager\sprt\html\agent\vbs\tsoe.vbs
If I clicked the OK it would happen again about a minute later...if I ignored it more would pop up about every 20 seconds, filling the screen with the windows like a deck of cards.
I also kept getting windows popping up with script error messages e.g.
SCRIPT ERROR Line 91 Char 1 Error object expected ?? 0 URL dsl/sbcyahoo.com\lib\cap\email\html
I think the stockcharts.com candlestick groups did work but looked different than it did before (different size and colors).
I uninstalled the McAfee program, thinking it may have caused the problem, but no soap.
I used the restore feature in accessories and tried restoring to 2 different dates, a month and 2 months back, but the stockcharts candlestick 6 charts feature still wouldn't work.
The correct icon is gone from the SBC sign on pop up, and today when I tried to sign on the script error thing popped up, and when I clicked NO to ignore, the browser appeared and I couldn't get online.
A couple times I clicked START and it wouldn't work-nothing happened.
I've downloaded and installed I.E. 6 which has Outlook Express about 4 times as well as the SBC software several times. Nothing helps.
Now the CPU is making weird noises..
