It's not pathetic, at all. It's a very sophisticated and successful PR campaign. What's happened is, the Militarists have seized for themselves the two great symbols that Americans revere: cross and flag. They largely own those symbols today, while actually promoting the opposite of what those symbols originally stood for.
The Militarists say Christ is on their side, in spite of the fact that there is nothing in the New Testament, to support waging wars of aggression; not much there to support killing anyone for any reason. That's why the Militarists love the Old Testament so much; lots of ethnic cleansing and murder and war at God's command, in the Old Testament.
The Militarists say Jefferson is on their side, in spite of the fact that Jefferson wanted a peaceful nation of citizen-farmers, no standing army, no deficit financing of wars, and no military interference in any other nation. Jefferson would be appalled, if he knew America has soldiers in 130 foreign nations, is running concentration camps, holding a citizen (Jose Padilla) in prison for years without charge or trial.
They've got the symbols, without the substance. |
