And to make it worse than the raw number differences alone, they used to rate the engines on a test stand, with no accessories (like generator, fan, water pump, etc), to get the HP ratings. Along about the 60's the mfgrs started using rear wheel HP ratings on the vehicle using a full-size dynamometer. For one thing it kept insurance rates down a little. An example is a 67 Corvette with a 425 HP rating, the engine by itself actually produced in excess of 485 HP. Nowadays when a car is advertised with 280 HP, that's what the drive wheels can put to the pavement, assuming the suspension can keep the wheels on the pavement.
