seems like every 10 seconds a window pops up naming something

What firewall are you using? The firewall is asking you if you want to allow the connection to your computer. You have to tell it how to handle the request. You need to read the firewall's help file and learn how to configure permissions. The program is in "learning mode" and needs to know what applications should be allowed to connect to and from your computer. A good way to start is to deny access and see if what you want to do works. IMO, a computer without a firewall is like leaving your car unlocked while you go shopping. It won't be long before your car comes up missing.

By default, OE's settings are not very safe. Never use the preview pane, don't open attachments unless you have requested them, and get over the desire to see cute HTML messages. Use text only.
