Even as Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina fights to keep alive his campaign for the nomination, registering an aggressive performance Sunday in a New York debate, most Democrats have accepted that Kerry will be the man to challenge Bush. The chairman of the Democratic National Committee suggested the primary battles should end soon so the party can coalesce around one candidate to compete with Bush's better-financed operation.

"Clearly, at some point in the near future, we need to have a nominee of the Democratic Party," Terry McAuliffe said on "Fox News Sunday." "We need, at some point, to be unified to go together with one message."

Still, only about a third of those who plan to vote Tuesday say they have learned enough about the candidates to make an informed choice, according to the University of Pennsylvania's National Annenberg Election Survey. Kerry's momentum, which began when he won the Iowa caucuses on Jan. 19, has driven the race and allowed him to proceed with little hindrance from his rivals.
