Rolling back tax cuts for the rich makes perfect sense. Someone has to start paying off the enormous Bush deficits.

A gas tax will only be necessary if we elect to move forward to replace Arab oil as our primary energy source. That also makes perfect sense. The tax on gas would then be paid back to people who use cleaner energy sources, as a subsidy. Ditto subsidies for fuel efficiency versus taxes for guzzling.

That's how the government can change behavior. Like taxing cigarettes but rewarding those who quit with lower insurance rates. Or raising the price of water but giving subsidies to those who plant desert vegetation instead of lawns (like they're doing in parched Las Vegas). All just common sense stuff.
