By GARY MCWILLIAMS Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
HOUSTON -- Cargill Inc. said Dell Inc. will supply personal computers and network-servers under a three-year contract valued at up to $30 million.
The Minneapolis-based agricultural products concern said the deal includes the delivery of about 30,000 desktop, notebook and server computers to its offices in 61 countries.
"This allows us to standardize" on a common PC configuration companywide, said Rita J. Heise, Cargill vice president and chief information officer. As part of the contract, Dell will provide services to ensure Cargill offices receive the same configuration regardless of location.
Ms. Heise declined to disclose other bidders on the contract, which has been in contention for eight months. Dell committed to expanding its distribution to countries where closely-held Cargill has offices, she said.
In the past, the company purchased PCs made by International Business Machines Corp. In addition to replacing its PCs, Cargill is in the process of evaluating replacements for its corporate servers, composed largely of IBM AS/400 minicomputers, she said.
