Phillip; Your read on what I have said is completely wrong. I did not say break it(their distribution system), it works fine. I said set up a parallel system for clones with Apple selling CPUs and OS at a profit, but no signed deals. Just adjust the price of OS and CPU to control market, but keep it so there are strong clone sales. Each clone sale will bring pure profit to Apple, and there will be some loss of box sales, but in my opinion there will be a net increase in Apple OSs running. My system is a hybrid, not Apple, Not Intel, and not Microsoft. Best of each without the weakness of the IBM way where they let the cat all the way out of the bag, and no IBM item was needed at all. High priced proprietary stuff??, doomed. How many tickets to New York at $10,000 each from LA will Apple Air sell when US Air sells then for $400?? Wintel gives us all a new way to travel. Even the graphics stuff(long Apples mainstay) can be done by Wintels now
Speaking of open systems NOT, when you speak of Unix, the 20 or so Unixes around are a dogs breakfast of proprietary market protectionism. There was point when a UNIX GUI was capable of beating the Win3/Win95/Win NT hegemony, but not now. Those who could all ran away in 20 different directions to try to get their market under their thumb, only to find out what was under their thumb was a dead flea. True UNIX is better and more capable, but the distributed R & D money is scattered and ineffective as it is used to make more little Unix fixes for the dead flea people. Unix should have insisted on a fully compatible open system open to all for the same price for the same product, and not allowed all these 20 or so variants. Microsoft spends the same money on on product that they waste on 20, no wonder Unix is a crippled shell of what it could have been. It still is better than NT, but look at the sales figures, it dont sell as well. It has a GUI. Unix could have been a world beater with a good GUI. The crappy ones out there now are too little and too late, but they do work. Apple is absolutely on the wrong track if they stifle the clones. Bill |
