Let the states sort it out. That's their job, after all, and there's no reason to think they can't do it.

Well, yes, but then you have to deal with full faith and credit. Suppose a gay couple gets married in Mass and then moves to Washington, which outlaws gay marriage. Are they married in Washington? Does Washington have to give full faith and credit to the Mass marriage?

If you say yes, then you're saying that one state can dictate the marriage laws for the whole country.

If you're saying no, you have a real mess on your hands.

But you have to answer the question one way or the other.

So how do you answer it?
