The economic benefits are at least equally impressive. By reducing energy imports, the US would reduce its hemorrhaging trade deficit and the mortgaging of the nation’s future that such borrowing implies.

No. Importing oil provides an economic benefit for the US. If it was not beneficial it would not be imported. Using the oil we produce goods and services worth more then the oil costs. If we didn't import the oil we would produce less goods and services. Another way to say that we would produce less goods and services is to say that our GDP would shrink, another way to state it is that our economy would get smaller, or simply put we would be poorer.

You're assuming that there would be no replacement for the oil. That's not what's being proposed.

It was the end of the Roman Republic and the disappearance of representative government on earth for almost 1,700 years, until the English Civil Wars in the 1600s. That is the reality we are confronting today—offering up our democracy in propitiation to an Empire for Oil.

Nonsense.

You just made the argument up above. Without oil, we're dead in the water..........unless we have a viable alternative. We need the present levels of production to sustain the current size of the population. What do you think will happen when shortages develop? What do you think brought down other civilizations? Do you really believe we are invincible?

How long do you think you would stay solvent if YOU had a severe drug dependency? Trust me.....not long. Countries are no different than individual humans.

And how long do you think the oil will last? There's talk that Saudi Arabian production is maxing out. Meanwhile demand is growing. How much time do we have left......30, 50, 100 years?
