Here's yet another way to use your notebook computer with your desktop. (Or multiple desktops, as well.)

synergy2.sourceforge.net

This software acts as a "software KVM", but without the "V".

(BTW, here's one WITH the M... kavoom.biz )

This will allow you to use a single keyboard and mouse to control multiple computers that have their own displays. It expands the desktop - from the standpoint of the mouse - to include all computers.

I was about to get a USB KVM switch. I think I can avoid that expense and tangle of wires with this. (I now use a USB keyboard and mouse. There don't seem to be any problems supporting "legacy" software with the latest systems. That is, I can use both the USB keyboard and mouse in DOS, which I do use for running hard disk backups, etc.)

You simply move the mouse off of one screen and onto the other. When you type, you are typing on the system that the mouse cursor is on. You can even cut and paste between systems.

(Previously, there was some discussion here about sofware that will let you use your notebook's display as an additional display for your desktop system. This adds two more possibilities to more intelligently use your notebook with your desktop system(s).)
