So it is not about consciousness, compassion, or feeling--it is biology

Depends what "it" is. Being human is about biology. That doesn't mean that consciousness, compassion, feeling, or the potential for these things are irrelevant.

or is there some underlying preference for humanity not related to either competence, or level of consciousness or reason?

The preference is related to consciousness and competence. I have a preference for humanity because it is a sentient, sapient species.

"The claim is the claim of the fetus or zygote, society would be acting on his or her behalf. The sperm has no claim."

On what basis? Neither have consciousness; both have potential to become part of a reasoning entity

The zygote is an entity that if things work out will become reasoning. The sperm is not.
