Kerry also has the gravitas persona which disarms the rightwing attacks on him that seek to make him out to be a lightweight or flake. People look at Kerry they see a strong straight-talking father figure, a wise and weathered man who's above the petty lying, ego trips and sniping. But he's also got a warm and friendly side to him, and a loving family around him.

Once the Drudge sex rumor turned out to be phony, the rightwing has begun to realize they're actually going to have to run on serious issues and Bush's record. That's what has them so nervous. I would say there is very little real optimism in the Republican party now. They know things are going to change for them, maybe drastically. But in the meantime they are going to put up a nasty fight. I always said they would have to be dragged out of power kicking, screaming and biting.
