not to be a naysayer but I just wonder how aggressive power generating companies are in marketing terms...I'm not speaking of energy trading companies (the ones that still exist) but the generators and deliverers of electricity.

I don't perceive them to be risk takers but then it won't require a huge amount of money to roll out the service, not in terms of capex. But having the gear and the ability to deliver isn't the same as having a viable business - for that you need aggressive and sustained marketing ability, including a branding strategy. When was the last time you saw "Mirant Brand electricity" or some such?

Dealing with a highly competitive marketplace just isn't something power companies have had to deal with - and there are many providers of this service in any given marketplace. But if they can give the customer 1 megabit service for $24.95 a month, asymetrical or symmetrical, then they can "own" the market, just so long as they can get the message out, self-installation is feasible, etc.

Just some quick impressions that came to mind...
