On the one hand, I agree the acquisition of new knowledge is important. But on the other hand, we could use major serious research on the oceans and the environment. I'd rather spend the money on that, and leave Mars for later.... Much later.
When one considers the major practical gains from NASA so far has been public relations, you have to wonder about planetary exploration. Remember Tang? Teflon? Passed off as spin off benefits from the space program. They were not. They were developed separately by firms fueled by the profit motive, then put to use by NASA.
