John Re..So the communism / terrorism analogy is invalid. Unless you have evidence that the writer didn't believe we were directly threatened by communism. Do you have that evidence?

I don't see why the analogy is invalid. The writer believed we were threatened by terrorism, Al Qaeda specifically. For my analogy to be invalid on that score, then the writer would have had to feel we weren't threatened by communism. Both were threats, and in both instances, we attacked both indirectly, not in the country of origin. We have attacked countries preemptively all throughout our history, starting with the Barbary coast, and the Spanish american war. Actually the Maine, which was the spark for that war, could have had an accidental explosion. In both, our ships were attacked. Saddam did attack our planes doing the flyovers, and he did try to assinate GW senior, so there were provocations in all three.
