Not to mention the resources we might find on Mars. Potentially whole new elements, whole new compounds. I read somewhere that there is an asteroid which is a pure diamond, would supply all the industrial diamonds needed for thousands of years. What might we find out in the asteroid belt?

People complain about the cost -- but what about the cost of Columbus's expedition in today's dollars? Probably pretty astronomical. But technology and frequency have brought the same crossing down to a few hundred dollars per person.
