In my opinion, It was Mort Topfer, with brilliant ideas about direct sales, customization and inventory, along with Tom Meredith's ideas about inventory ownership and contracts, which coupled with Michael Dell's charisma and drive which drove the company performance in the 1990s. Of course it didn't hurt for this trio to meet at a time of unprecidented productivity in the country as a whole. With all of them disengagued, for the most part, I see the company as becomming much more similar to their rivals. Rollins strikes me as someone more likely to talk with the lawyers and cpas and take a steady cautious approach than the preceeding trio. TP
