Magazine Calls for 'NY Times' Response to Blair Charges

NEW YORK Publishers Weekly, in what it calls the "first review" of the new Jayson Blair book, will call on The New York Times to take seriously charges in the book -- and respond to them.

In the review, the respected trade journal of the book publishing industry declares, "In spite of Blair's reputation for lying, the Times must respond to his charges. If true, then by acting upon them, the newspaper will only increase the transparency it committed to by its hiring of an ombudsman, a direct result of the Blair affair."

The magazine announced today that it would make this "first review" available at its Web site at 12:01 AM this Saturday, the publication date for the book, but released brief excerpts from the review this morning. Another excerpt: "Blair's chronicle of his Times years brims with inside gossip newshounds love and he names names while dishing it. Throughout, he levels serious charges against the newspaper."
