Bin Laden (assuming he's alive) has always been addressing an Arab/Muslim audience. There is no evidence he has any clue about the concerns of an American audience.

Besides, I have long believed it took a singular lack of understanding of America to launch such an attack with Republicans in the White House !

Have you ever read Lee Harris' essay, Al Qaeda's Fantasy Ideology? Harris argues that even 9/11 was a grand 'show' aimed at winning over a Muslim audience.

I haven't seen the essay, but what Harris was saying clearly hits the mark.

Have you had a look through Thomas Lippman's "Inside the Mirage" yet ? Quite an interesting read about Saudi Arabia and our relation to the country, though I've only browsed in it while at Borders so far and not gone through the whole thing.
