>> Cell Phones Instrumental in Tracking Down Al Qaeda

Investigators followed mobile phone trails across three continents during the terrorism investigation code-named Mont Blanc, which led to the arrest of dozens of suspected Al Qaeda members. The investigation revolved around the terrorists' use of prepaid SIM cards. The terrorists apparently believed that their activities could not be tracked because the cards were purchased without revealing the buyer's identity. However, investigators monitored phone activity and phone conversations for two years, and disrupted at least three planned terrorist attacks in Saudi Arabia and Indonesia. A senior counterterrorism official in Europe said the monitoring of the phones via SIM cards was one of the most effective tools used to locate Al Qaeda members. Terrorists have since learned these lessons and now communicate via the Internet, or trusted couriers. (Source: New York Times) <<
