Expanded FOMA Coverage << More coverage coming your way.... >> Abstracted below; * 12,700 base stations nationwide by the end of March. * Coverage to 99% of the national population by the end of March. * In-building Mobile Communications Systems (IMCS) will increase to about 1,600 nationwide, providing wider access to FOMA service in high-rise buildings, underground shopping malls and subway stations. * DoCoMo is planning to install base stations in all 147 subway stations of the Eidan subway network. While its great to have 99% coverage, one has to onder how dense that coverage is. Given the size of the country, that's a lot of base stations but one has to consider that those cells are in 2.1 GHz. I'm still ondering if DoCoMo will move to UMTS at the 3GPP 'R/99R4' level or whether they will instead wait for R5 to make the move. - Eric -
