With all the scandals and earnings manipulation that we've heard about, I like to look at ROE to gauge how efficient a company is and how much management can squeeze out of assets. I do get concerned, however, when debt is high, as this depresses the equity side of the ROE equation, resulting in a misleadingly high figure.
