I prefer to phrase the question differently.

Assuming we can believe the government, or we can believe our own eyes; why would we not say that 5 to 30% annual price increases (since Bush came into office) amount to inflation by another name?

We are seeing inflation in health care costs, basic foodstuffs, residential real estate, military budgets, higher education, fuel, professional services and even greater increases in basic materials like copper, steel, lumber (93% this year alone!).

The CPI is such a sick joke that the FRB refuses to even consider using it as a metric. Other than a gauge of how gullible the public is, I reckon.
