Gays have made enormous strides in having civil unions accepted, but are pushing the envelope (legally and emotionally) with the marriage issue. The sensibilities of many who are trying to be fair in spite of personal opinions are offended.

I agree, and think a backlash is coming. Sen. Orrin Hatch is introducing his own constitutional amendment, which reads:

"Civil marriage shall be defined in each state by the legislature or the citizens thereof. Nothing in this Constitution shall be construed to require that marriage or its benefits be extended to any union other than that of a man and a woman."

Therefore the proponents and opponents of same-sex marriage would have to fight it out state by state in the legislative arena where it belongs, not the judicial.

...some of the responses to the Bush ads--not the ones that are obviously out to get Bush politically-- but those of relatives and workers who feel that the deaths are being politicized and used for his personal gain and that there were less offensive ways to present Bush's strengths than the one chosen.

I ran across this on the Little Green Footballs site (http://littlegreenfootballs.com/weblog/?entry=10054) about the background of the 9/11 victims who have been speaking out:

Anti-War 9/11 Victims: Project of Tides Center

“Peaceful Tomorrows” is the anti-war September 11 victim group often seen onstage at International ANSWER rallies, and their representatives have been quoted (usually without any context) in nearly every story about President Bush’s new advertisements. Would you be terribly surprised to discover that, according to their web site, Peaceful Tomorrows is a project of the Tides Center—the far left funding group to which Teresa Heinz Kerry has given millions of dollars?
