That said, in a kinder, gentler era, rumor had it that J. Edgar turned a blind eye to the Mafia because he liked to play the horses. If true, a much simpler explanation.
Or both were true. Now that you mention the horsies, I remember that too. The Mob would tell him which horse would win. He supposedly was really good at the track. :-)
