Youth Hostel Association Join REST Campaign The National Energy Foundation to Carry Out Clear Skies Feasibility Studies 'Grasping of Climate' Project Green Energy Machine is a real GEM Big discounts available when hiring renewable energy display
1. Youth Hostel Association Join REST Campaign
The Youth Hostel Association have joined the REST scheme. REST surveys will be carried out on at least ten of the associations' youth hostels. Advice on energy efficiency improvements and feasibility of renewable energy installations will be provided for each site. This includes the technical and financial aspects of technologies such as solar water heating, solar photovoltaics, wood heating, ground source heat pumps and wind turbines. Participation in the scheme will help The Youth Hostel Association to gain recognition for their efforts in saving energy and reducing carbon emissions and also increase their appeal to environmentally aware customers.
The REST campaign will be of interest to anyone owning or managing a hotel or guesthouse. REST stands for "Renewable Energy and Sustainable Tourism". It is a unique, EU sponsored, energy saving campaign running in six European countries to help hotels and guesthouses in their efforts to make energy savings and to use renewable forms of energy.

3. 'Grasping of Climate' Project
Partners: - Teknikens Hus - a Science Centre in Lule (Northern Sweden) - the project leader with experience in developing projects incorporating interactive exhibition - The National Energy Foundation (NEF) UK - an independent educational charity with a wide experience of working with schools for the promotion of energy efficiency and renewable energy - Rhônalpénergie-Environnement (RAEE) - the regional energy and environment agency for Rhône-Alpes (France)
Summary The main goal of the project is to develop an understanding how use of energy impacts our environment and climate, and how our individual choices in everyday life are of importance for the future. This will be done by inspiring and developing methods for teachers to work with their pupils on themed projects.
Teknikens Hus is one of Sweden's largest and most renowned science centres. Teknikens Hus' successful and established teaching methods of combining interactive exhibition and dramas together with theory and practical experiments will be used as a model. The National Energy Foundation (NEF) in UK is more specialised in teaching children about energy issues and complement therefore Teknikens Hus in a good way. Rhônalpénergie-Environnement (RAEE) has expertise in climate questions and a good network for dissemination of results to key target groups in a third language. Norrbotten Energy Network have a large national and international network in energy, environment and climate areas, and complement Teknikens Hus with an expertise in running projects as well as producing project reports. Interactive exhibitions and dramas will be set up. After the project period it will be possible for others to rent the exhibitions. A teacher inspirational guide, in three languages, summarising experiences and ideas collected during the project will be produced.
This is a 2½ year project commencing January 2003. The target area in the UK is primarily Eastern Region and East Midlands Region. The project will develop information, materials and activities for schools with the purpose of influencing the behaviour of pupils, parents, teachers, caretakers and politicians.

4. Green Energy Machine is a real GEM
During the Easter break NEF Renewables' Green Energy Machine (GEM) took up residence at the Redfield Community, Winslow, Buckinghamshire. GEM lived up to its name when the Community's electricity supply was cut off for a day. The machine's photovoltaics and wind turbine provided enough power for workshops and refurbishment work to continue as planned.
The mobile display continues to play a full role in spreading awareness at public events and schools and is particularly busy in May, June and July.
