"Acceptable" Mobile Advertising

quick_thinking,

<< that's mobile advertising in Japan.... maybe unacceptable in the US? >>

We can be prudish, and so can the Europeans

Back in about 1997 or so I got an e-mail from a customer friend who was then subscriber equipment manager of a major GSM carrier here in the states with an attached fill color .jpg.

The .jpg showed a color photo of a gray Ericsson front flip GSM - one of the first, if not the first, with a vibrating ringer. The phone was flanked on the left by two colorful vibrators, and on the right by two more colorful vibrators.

Underneath was the legend "Das T18S mit Vibra call" reversed out to white flanked by the Ericsson logo also reversed out to white.

It was really funny and very professionally shot. I thought it was a spoof of Ericsson but as it turned out it was a photo for an Ericsson print ad produced for them by Beneton.

Ericsson killed the ad before publication because it was considered not in proper taste for Europe.

Best,

- Eric -
