Kerry, on radio, says Bush shortchanging troops on gear
wbay.com

John Kerry has used the Democrats' weekly radio address to challenge President Bush to better support U-S troops.

Kerry says thousands of soldiers arrived in Iraq to find that with "danger around every corner, there wasn't enough body armor to protect them." Kerry says many families purchased the equipment and had it sent overseas.

The Democratic presidential nominee-in-waiting says if he were president he would never send troops into harm's way without enough "firepower and support."

Kerry called on the president to support a bill he has introduced in the Senate to reimburse families for their purchase of body armor.

The acting Army secretary told a Senate panel this week they did not expect U-S troops to face the kind of counterinsurgency they've seen and, therefore, were not prepared.
