Just before Enron imploded in 2001, Bush was talking about privatizing SS, as in dumping those trillions into the market. And I thought what a relief Enron, then the rest of the market nosedived before Bush and Cheney had the op to hand SS over to Lay. I assumed that would be the end of the privatazation discussion. HA. Two weeks ago Greenspan, slavering and rubbing his withered paws together, was talking reducing SS benefits. (btw, that hangnail celebrated his 80 or 90th birthday yesterday) And the WH response was: Republican lawmakers distanced themselves (from Greenspan)....with a once-projected $5.6 trillion 10-year surplus now gone, they are short of money needed to set up such accounts.

Democrats argued Bush's tax cuts and defense spending were a big reason for current deficits and that Social Security should not be sacrificed!

The good guys retorted: Presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., in Toledo, Ohio, promised, "If I'm president, we're simply not going to do it." Fellow candidate Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., called it "an outrage' for Greenspan to advocate Social Security cuts while also supporting efforts to make Bush's tax cuts permanent — at a cost of $1 trillion over a decade.

After hearing ABOUT Greenspan's comments: President Bush said he had not seen Greenspan's comments and said his position was that Social Security benefits "should not be changed for people at or near retirement."

Although on February 8, as your quote shows, Bush was saying 'sump'n' different: We got to deal with Social Security as well. The usual Bush lies, deceit and poor English.

On a personal note, I went to the local SS office and asked what Bush meant by "at or near retirement". They gave me Greenspan's phone number. So I called, and Greenspan's goons denyed knowing anything, said to call Congress. I find it appalling Greenspan and his illegal unAmerican, non-US govt Fed should have any say-so at all about SS.

All I know, zonkie, is four more years of Bush means all the money now in SS will be lining the pockets of the Bushies and their cronies.

"anybody but bush" ... "all people who aren't rich are lazy" That's right, anybody but the "war president" who will "never change"
