That certainly wouldn't surprise me as everything is valuable in China and things are really weak in the rural areas these days. The rural sector has taken a beating with the huge policy shifts that have taken place within china which are primarily 1) shifting marginal producing land back to forest and grassland, and 2) moving away from a grain self-sufficiency policy and grain quotas which makes total economic sense but makes for a painful transition in terms of farmers finding new crops to grow and the development of marketing/supply chains for them, and 3) downloading of government costs to villagers.

The rural sector is quite desperate right now and every government statement focuses on helping rural areas as the number one goal right now. The pressure is really coming all the way down the system as i am now hearing it out in the provinces at the county level which means they are serious.

I think what a lot of western commentators miss is the fact that china is thowing 10 million people a year off farms who need jobs. So besides the huge pull of manufacturing jobs, there is a massive push going on as well. at the same time, every revolution in this country has come from rural discontent rather than urban discontent. So you can imagine the importance of this within china and the need to create social stability.

Just a few words from the countryside since you mentioned the rural sector here. I'm here about 4 months a year but I'm usually out in the boonies so I get to see the other side of the Chinese miracle.
