The so-called 'history' most 'economists' refer to barely stretch over 100 years and for most of this period, the US is the only major country in the world that didn't experience war or other disasters on its homeland. Counting on catastrophes on the rest of the world to keep US being competitive is probably not a good strategy.

One only needs to travel to the rest of the world a few times over the past 10-20 years to see how the world has truly changed.

I live in Boston. For the past 20 years, the most exciting thing happening to the city seems to be the Central Artery Project (www.bigdig.com). It's all over now. Boston is once again ready to reminisce its past glories and return to its New England roots.
