I think we can all reasonbly expect most of those states to be in the Kerry column. The two to keep an eye on are Ohio and Florida. If both of those states are poised to vote for Kerry late in the election, it's all over. I'd say this election is Kerry's to lose at this point. There is certainly enough discontent in the country to bounce Bush from office. If Kerry to can channel that discontent into a coherent positive vision for the future of America, one that includes a Federal government interested in creating jobs and raising the standard of living for working Americans, then Kerry will win easily.

The big disadvantage that Republicans have going into every election is that they have to convince the bottom 90% of Americans that it's in their interest to vote Republican, which they often have no trouble doing by appealing to jingoistic patriotic themes and other hot button issues. They whip the masses up into a frenzy and get them to the polls voting against their own interests. Kerry needs to counter this strong current with a positive message, that's how Clinton won in 1992.
